It’s such a shame that it just isn’t really much fun to play.īIOMUTANT has a lot of charm, and a lot of promise when you first boot it up. In that respect, I absolutely cannot fault the magic that unfolds on the screen, because it looks utterly stunning. The art design is really on point here, straddling that line of realism and cartoon with ease. Its lush forests and rolling hills are some of the best we’ve seen yet, and the crumbling concrete of the wastes is actually terrifying in contrast. Getting to run around inside of a hulking mech is totally awesome.īIOMUTANT is a really gorgeous game. Discovering hidden bluffs and digging for supplies along the clifftops is a really great experience. All of the boss encounters are memorable and have some real shock value. The characters are interesting to look at, but like the systems behind the game, they rarely have any depth to them, just a vehicle for the story to continue unfolding.Īnd this really sucks, because there are some really promising moments in BIOMUTANT. There are combos to unlock for a variety of weapons, but they feel like nothing more than slick animations with higher numbers, as the combat lacks true weight. There’s a tonne of loot to find in BIOMUTANT, all with incredibly detailed stats and resistances to elements, but they are rarely used in interesting ways. It feels like the developers just threw a thousand ideas onto a dartboard, and only designed them to the bare minimum. There’s a morality system that is childish at best, and how it affected what was going on was never truly apparent to me. The territory control seems to have little to do with how easily I was able to move around the area. There are outposts to unlock and clear, mainly so you can skip traversal and just use the fast travel system if I’m being honest. There are mounts to discover and tame, but more often than not it was just as quick for me to sprint on foot as it was to call my badly controlling totally not a Fortnite Llama, and sprint across that way. Of course, this makes sense due to the fact that humanity has been eradicated, but it doesn’t necessarily make for a very fun video game. In order to complete humdrum task A, you will need to traverse the expansive landscapes that are largely empty. Quest design is stock standard “go here, kill that”, kind of fare. There's enough here for it to be overwhelming, with moves, abilities and weapons all ripe for the tweaking, but I found myself getting a handle on things early on - and in a world filled with talking animal mutant monsters, standing out is important. But that’s where my praise of BIOMUTANT ends because for the most part, we’ve already played this game a dozen times before. Weapons can be upgraded with up to seven unique parts, adding surprising RPG depth to proceedings with buffs to critical hit chances and elemental buffs. Still, as Biomutant progresses, weapons, moves and powers come together to allow for more stylish fights, but that early balancing act of attacking and then awkwardly sidestepping while waiting for abilities to recharge can creep back in. Biomutant's Ki system really limits what you can do in battle, to the point where it feels like a constant case of managing cooldown gauges. On this grand adventure, you won't be alone, however, as the game's narrator joins you to not only provide commentary but also to translate the gibberish of other characters in the world.īiomutant’s combat is one of the game’s saving graces, with guns blazing and metal clanging, with the potential for elemental magic, too.Įxpect to battle through smaller enemies and larger bosses alike, but at the start of the game, the combat can feel especially slow. Your furry character is tasked with taking down four giant world-eating creatures from the edges of the map in order to save the Tree of Life which is dotted in the middle. The earlier Breath of the Wild reference is most apparent when it comes to Biomutant’s story. The many options here do dictate your capabilities in battle but luckily you can change all of these multiple times in the game (except for your breed). You can even boost the size of your body parts using a chart which also dictates some attributes so if you have a big head, your intelligence stat will also increase. They’re in what breed of animal you choose, what class you’re in and then you get a resistance boost to a certain element between Heat, Cold, Biochemical and Toxic. Before you are thrust into the post-apocalyptic world of Biomutant you get to choose what your character looks like and Experiment 101 didn’t skimp on the customisation options here.īoosts and perks are spread around every option in the character creator.
